WHAT ARE LONG REACH EXCAVATORS USED FOR?
Excavators are considered to be very important machines, especially for the construction and mining industries, as they are used to excavate large amounts of ground from the surface. There are many excavator models on the market. Each excavator has a specific configuration for a particular excavation task. One particular model that is widely used is the long boom excavator. This type of machine is designed with a long boom, which is often referred to as an arm.
Long boom excavators are most commonly used for digging deep holes or trenches. Very often, long-arm excavators are used to digging rivers or lakes while being placed on a floating platform or barge. Some long reach excavator models are equipped with oversized counterweights designed to counteract the levering effect of the boom. When equipped with jack-ups and other similar attachments, long reach excavators can be used to reach high places. In addition, when equipped with a mechanical thumb attachment, the machine can be used to lift and move pipes, utility poles, and other similar objects.
Purpose of using a long-reach excavator
A long boom excavator is actually a tracked machine designed with a bucket and a stick for digging trenches and holes. Just like the tracked backhoe loader, the long reach excavator can be found on every major construction or mining site. Although it is the ideal machine for digging deep holes and trenches, the long reach excavator has a limited digging capacity. Its main part is the boom, while the rod section can be extended all the way to the bucket. Special hydraulic cylinders power the three main components: the stick, the boom and the bucket.
Designing a long reach excavator is a demanding task that requires more than simply attaching a long boom and a long rod to a standard excavator. Longer and larger cylinders are needed for longer reach and effective component movement. Long boom excavators need to be properly designed with balancing devices in order to not only counteract the weight of the boom but also to provide additional leverage. This extra leverage is created when the bucket is filled. Failure to incorporate the additional balancing device can result in tipping when the excavator tries to lift the loaded bucket.
As the name suggests, the long boom excavator has an extended arm between the body and the working boom, powered by the cylinders. The long boom is fitted with a cylinder operating system that powers the movement of the cylinders. All of these designs have doubled the working range of the bucket, which can climb higher, deeper and further. These significant improvements have made the long boom excavator a specialized excavation tool of great practical value for minerals, docks, storage, and rescue.
The benefits of using long boom excavators
Specifically, long boom excavators offer the following advantages.
1. Wider range of applications
The long boom can work in harsh and extreme working environments that other excavators cannot reach. This unique advantage makes them reliable enough to handle a wide range of structures.
2. Higher standards
The machine has been manufactured with strict process and testing standards to ensure excellent construction performance.
3. Easy to operate
The long boom excavator is highly mechanized, with a simple working mechanism and easy operation, which improves work efficiency and saves labor resources.
4. High safety
The distance between the operator and the operating object is far, reducing the danger in the working process. And the strengthened structure greatly improves safety.
In addition, a number of guidelines should be followed when operating a long boom excavator to make the most of its advantages.
1. The long boom should not be overloaded.
2. The hydraulic cylinder piston rod should not be moved downwards and a safe distance should be left.
3. When turning around, the long boom should be 0.5m high from the ground.
4. The bucket load should meet the specified standard, overloading will shorten the life of the long arm and the whole machine.
5. Do not dig directly in rocky areas, crush the rocks before digging.
6. The excavator should not walk or turn around when the bucket is working.
